The UK is beginning to take the lead in healthtech

The UK healthtech space is so incredibly exciting right now.

I’m lucky enough to have worked with some really great companies in the space (shout out to Healthily, HealthUnlocked, Thrive Mental Wellbeing, StepJockey - transforming workplace health ADVANCE®AI) and it’s reminded me exactly why it’s one of my favourite sectors to hire for.

When you’re in a room full of healthcare executives and technologists, they bring a different energy with them and their collaboration is always impressive. That sense of purpose is infectious, and it makes attracting the talent pool more enjoyable too.

Come here, build here, scale here

I’m pleased to see that, with policies like the MHRA’s fast-tracked pathway to healthcare innovation, the UK is actively saying to global healthtech companies: come here, build here, scale here.

The UK is beginning to take the lead in healthtech.

Growing clusters and world-class companies

Cambridge. Oxford. Edinburgh. Manchester, London and Bristol… all these clusters are growing, the investment is flowing, and the companies coming out of this ecosystem are genuinely world-class

CMR Surgical taking robotic surgery global, Ultromics catching heart disease earlier than ever, Kheiron Medical using AI to find cancer in mammograms, Renalytix transforming kidney diagnostics, and, of course, Smith+Nephew continuing to push boundaries in orthopaedics.

BenevolentAI (drug discovery), Huma healthcare AI (digital patient monitoring), and Accurx (NHS primary care integration), other notable mentions: Numan, Cera, Birdie Lifebit, Numan, ZOE., Healx, Exscientia.

Healthtech is a very broad term

Healthtech is also a very broad term, and today it can cover Robotics, AI & Drug Discovery, Digital Health & Patient Management, Elderly & Long-Term Care, MedTech & Physical Devices, Digital Therapeutics (DTx) and BioTech & Genomics.

I really think healthtech could become one of our most important growth sectors in the next decade.
