Why Anthropic and OpenAI's London expansion is good news for London's job market

I’m actually pretty excited by the big news that Anthropic and OpenAI are both opening and expanding London offices with huge Talent Acquisition hiring plans

I think the knock-on effect will be very positive for the London job market. Here’s why.

Both headcount plans are substantial

First off, both headcount plans are substantial. OpenAI’s space fits 544 people and Anthropic’s up to 800. That’s a really significant headcount, and they’re not going to grow those teams through US transfers alone.

A domino effect across the job market

I think they’ll be recruiting from existing AI companies and big US tech already in London, who’ll then have to recruit their lost members from the software industry more broadly, who’ll in turn recruit from adjacent industries. I’ve seen this pattern before in Banking. When major players land and hire aggressively, it creates movement all the way down the chain and a domino effect which will end up being positive across the job market.

Real entry points for graduates

I think it might finally create real entry points again, Graduate hiring in tech has been incredibly tough recently, but if demand is pulling experienced people upward, something has to fill the gap below and I’d like to think that’s graduates, plus other qualified people who’ve been waiting on the side-lines and might not have had the first bite of the AI cherry.

What’s your take?

I’m genuinely curious to see how this plays out over the next 18 months. What’s your take? Optimistic about this potential chain reaction of AI hiring?
